Between everything being free
and nothing being so
lies the whole of the ocean.
And if the extremes touch,
perhaps it is the same thing to spend
one’s existence peeling banknotes
off the body with every act
as to walk across the asphalt
as though it were earth
among fruit-bearing trees,
and to have each thing be worth
what it costs to reach out
a hand and take it.
One can die in either way:
of hunger for having no money,
or of money for having no hunger.
